During the last few months of research on why we’re violent, here are the dominant theories, all of which have sophisticated studies and statistics and hypotheses behind them:
- It’s a resource thing.
- We’re wired for it.
- It’s men.
- It’s tribalism.
- It’s greed.
- It’s the power structures in place: they are self perpetuating.
- It’s the illusion that we are all separate, that one man can be “more” than another- racism, misogyny, all fall into that category.
- It’s the cultural mind.
- It’s economics: cost/benefit analysis writ large.
While this an interesting set of answers to a very good question, a more pressing one may be: why is there peace? When does peace happen what are the cicumstances and why?
